The connection between music and landscape is beautifully expressed on this new album Cairngorm, by pianist Mhairi Hall and her trio. On Friday 21st August they will transport a grand piano up Cairngorm mountain, which lies near Aviemore in the central Highlands of Scotland, upon reaching the Ptarmigan venue at the top they will perform the music live to celebrate the launch of this special album.
Legendary world music producer Dónal Lunny, who journeyed with the trio to artist retreat Crear in Argyll to record the album, produced Cairngorm. The space provided them with the appropriate inspirational surroundings, which has resulted in rich sounding emotional music played by three of Scotland’s exceptional musicians. Complimenting Mhairi, who was raised in Aviemore, on drum kit and percussion is fellow musician from Strathspey, Fraser Stone and on guitar is Michael Bryan.
The music on the album was inspired by the Cairngorm mountain and it’s surrounding area, and the relationship between the stunning scenery and the music is apparent throughout the album. Both traditional material and composed pieces by Mhairi are the content, as she explained, "It was very important for us to try and capture a sense of the area through our music. Many of the melodies are hundreds of years old, and were written for places that lie unchanged today or old legends and people. We hope that we have created a sound, which is respectful of this."
