Nani Noam Vazana is one of few artists in the world that writes and composes new songs in the endangered Ladino language - the
language, close to Spanish, spoken by the Jewish population of multifaith Spain in the 15th century. There are thought to be less
than 60,000 speakers today. In her 4th solo album Ke Haber ('What's New') she captures the spirit of the ancient, matriarchal
language and culture and propels it into the 21st century with socially pertinent lyrics, celebrating migration, gender and female
empowerment.
The soundscape is a bridge between tradition and modern life, capturing the sounds and smells of the marketplace and fusing them
with raw, flamenco-like vocals and surprising instrumentations. Soft choral-like trombones embellish mariachi guitars and Arabic
percussion with glimpses of piano, cello and even South American plucked charango tracks, making this record a mosaic of Magic
Realism.
Nani's artistry reflects the times we live in. A simultaneous unravelling of individual identity and a yearning for roots digging. Ancient
texts about sex change, infidelity & even homoerotic poetry written by rabbis in the middle ages alongside original lyrics about
female empowerment in the backdrop of arranged marriage, belief in magic and fairies, an alternative passing away ceremony and
balancing luck with self worth, collide yet manage to compliment each other.
Nani presents a new sound & perspective, avoiding the cliches of Ladino music, and aims to win a place within the realms of
contemporary Latin world / Indie music. Her music doesn't sound traditional, yet it manages to make an almost gone culture
relevant again.
