During their tour of Australia and New Zealand in April 1964, Dusty Springfield, Gene Pitney, Gerry & The Pacemakers and Brian Poole & The Tremeloes stopped off in Melbourne and recorded a special for Australian television titled 'The Liverpool Sound'.
The 'Liverpool Sound' special was the first music special of its type to be produced for Australian television and the hour-long show was only broadcast there and has been unseen since 1964.
The show, transferred from the surviving 16mm picture and sound components by the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA), features many hits from each of the acts, all performed live with the exception of Gerry & The Pacemakers. Sponsored by the cosmetics company Max Factor, the special includes the original adverts, thereby retaining the ambience of the original broadcast.
Songs in order of performance are:
Gene Pitney with The Echoes: Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa; If I Didn’t Have a Dime; The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance; I Wanna Love My Life Away
Brian Poole & The Tremeloes: Twist And Shout; Candy Man; Swingin' On A Star; The Three Bells; Do You Love Me
Dusty Springfield with The Echoes: I Only Want To Be With You; The Love Of A Boy; Stay Awhile; Shake It Up
Gerry & The Pacemakers: I Like It; I’m the One; How Do You Do It; You'll Never Walk Alone; A Shot Of Rhythm And Blues;
Ensemble: When The Saints Go Marching In
